It’s been just over a month since I put up the rules to Diamonds & Dragons, a dungeon crawling card game that my wife and I have gotten into playing.

We still really love the game, for the simplicity, the surprise, and the light layer of story that makes for an interesting card game to play when we have a spare 10 minutes.

When I first posted the rules, we mainly played with one person as a dealer and the other as the adventuring party. But since I’ve been working on a way for us both to play, and I’m happy to say that I’ve found something pretty good.

Here are the updated rules for Diamonds & Dragons, with the additional rules for playing with 2 players. It’s a great little game and I hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

I’m working on refining the ruleset for better use with Dungeons & Dragons and other tabletop roleplaying games. In the meantime, here’s an extra page that can help you start to adapt this game for TTRPGS.

I love your blog, and I read it all the time. I have a question about the rules for Diamonds and Dragons 2.0. When do weapons break? It seems like the example gameplay contradicts the ruleset. “If your weapon has already been used against an enemy of equal value or lower, your weapon breaks and is discarded.” Equal value of the weapon or a previous enemy? Overall could you re-word/re-explain the weapon breaking mechanic to me? Thanks a bunch, God bless.

    1. Thanks for the question! Glad you’re enjoying the blog. I’ll try to reword that a bit in the doc when I have more brainpower. For a quick answer, it’s equal value of a previous enemy. So if the 7 of Diamonds is your weapon, you might use it to fight (in order) a Queen of Spades (-5 hp), 10 of Clubs (-3 hp), and 6 of clubs (-0 hp). The order of the enemies is important. If you fought the 10 or 6 of Clubs first, you could not then use the same weapon to fight the Queen of Spades. The weapon would “break” and be discarded and the Queen would deal full damage (-12 hp). Does that help?

Okay, thank you, that does make sense. Basically your weapon will last as long as you use it to fight something that was weaker than before. Thanks again, James!
